McDonald’s has confirmed customers can purchase a “secret” menu item that was popular at the restaurant in the 90s.
Fans of the fast food giant have been desperate to get their hands on an ice cream birthday cake after it was claimed on social media Aussies could purchase one for just $14.95.
Brisbane woman Bec Hardgrave recently decided to put the rumour to the test, heading to her local Macca’s drive-through to purchase the item, a staple at McDonald’s birthday parties in the 90s and 2000s.
The fitness influencer was successful in her quest, and shared her “nostalgic” discovery in a viral video, prompting Macca’s to reveal how to get your hands on one.
“We love seeing our customers reminisce on special memories at Macca’s,” a spokesperson told news.com.au.
“The nostalgic McDonald’s ice-cream cake is available for purchase in some restaurants, pending stock availability.
“If you would like to purchase it, we recommend calling your local restaurant ahead of time to check if they have it in stock.”
Ms Hardgrave said she’d been inspired to find out if the rumours were true as her birthday was “coming up” and she had fond “old memories of McDonald’s birthday parties”.
“If you didn’t have a McDonald’s birthday party, you must not have grown up in Australia because they were iconic,” she states in the TikTok clip.
“And then I remembered McDonald’s birthday cakes... like the ice cream cakes.
“Did you get one of those? Because I definitely did. I thought, do they still sell those? So let’s find out.”
Ms Hardgrave filmed herself as she drove into her local Macca’s drive-through and ordered the cake.
“I was just wondering if I could get a birthday ice cream cake? Or if you sell those, still?” she asks the McDonald’s employee.
The clip then cuts to her holding a Peter’s Original Party Cake, which contains 15 serves, and can also be purchased at Coles and Woolworths.
“Oh my god, they had it,” she said, showing the receipt as proof of purchase.
“It doesn’t even have McDonald’s packaging but the employee handed me the box and he’s like, ‘I’ve never seen anyone get this before’.”
She finished her video by explaining she had “loved” the ice cream cake as a kid, describing it as “elite”.
“Happy birthday to me even though my birthday isn’t in a month’s time. It’s never too early to celebrate,” she said.
“Now I’ve got ice cream sorted after dinner over the next couple of months.”
Her video has been viewed more than 120,000 times since it was shared last week, with many declaring the find was “amazing”.

While one shared: “I used to host the birthday parties at my local Macca’s! I loved it, my shift consisted of playing games, going in the jungle gym and eating birthday cake.”
