Russell Andre Robinson 56, of Portsmouth departed this life to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 18, 2023.

Russell was born on February 17, 1967, to Wayne and Shirley (deceased) Robinson.

Russell attended I.C. Norcom High School (85).  He was a member of the Emperors Fraternity Incorporated and established a life-long connection with those brothers. Russell went on to his parents’ alma mater, Virginia State University, after high school.

Russell had a love for sports, especially baseball. He began in little league; he made several all-star teams representing the Bennett’s Creek Baseball league.  He also played in high school as well as on a collegiate level. He played for Virginia State University and defined the position of catcher.  He took pleasure in coaching the youth, with his nephew Josiah being one of his favorites to coach.

Russell worked in the Newport News Shipyard for several years and as a welder for a few different companies over the years. Russell also had a great appreciation for cars. He loved nice cars and enjoyed making sure they were clean and detailed. He took pride in detailing cars as he worked in that vocation in the final season of his life. Russell always seemed to bounce back from his personal struggles and life difficulties. He esteemed family and took joy in calling and being a part of his family group text messages every morning.

Russell had an outgoing personality and enjoyed being around people. He always seemed to find a laugh to give to those who needed it. He was a huge sports fan and loved bringing up conversations about sports from a historical and current perspective.  He was a strong fiber in the communities of Cavalier Manor and Charlestowne Townhouses. Russell was the faithful and dedicated caregiver to his mother Shirley for years, whom he called his best friend. Russell knew almost everyone and almost everyone knew him.

Russell accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and savior at an early age. He was baptized at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Portsmouth, Virginia under the Pastorate of the late Dr. Harvey N. Johnson.

Preceding his death is his mother, Shirley Ann Robinson.  Russell leaves to cherish his memories, his only child Anthony Jerome Skipper.  He also leaves his father Wayne Robinson. He was the oldest sibling and brother of Dwayne Robinson (Markeeta) of Fredericksburg, Va., sister Ina Robinson of Chesapeake, Va., and Larry Bivens (who was like a brother) Portsmouth, Va.  He leaves fond memories with his nephews Dwayne “Deuce” Robinson, Camrin Patterson, Josiah Robinson and Pierre Bivens (who was like a nephew.)  He leaves his only aunt, Rita Henry (Maryland) and a host of other family and friends. He also leaves his special friend Ashley Hassell to cherish his memory.
