Thomas Krauth Biography

Thomas Krauth is one of the most popular and richest Art Dealer who was born on November 8, 1953 in Eberbach, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. When 1993 came around, Krauth was released from auction company Phillips and purchased a stake in Michael Brenner’s concert company “BB Promotion”. Always seeking the most innovative and high-quality stage entertainment, Krauth purchased rights to English musicals and shows many of which were produced in the US and then brought them for the German stage. Krauth presented George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin’s musical My One and Only as well as their operetta Porgy & Bess as guest performances at renowned and large theaters located in Berlin, Cologne, Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg and Vienna in Austria. Krauth also staged ballet works Carmen Flamenco and Bolero by Spanish choreographer and dancer Rafael Aguilar. Krauth also obtained the rights of German-speaking nations to the world-renowned Harlem Gospel Singers.

In 1995, Krauth boughts rights to the musical Grease and started focusing on musicals, own productions and theatre. He withdrew from the Mannheim concert agency “BB Promotion”, but stayed in close business contact with his friend Michael Brenner.

After Krauth and Michael Brenner had jointly taken over the Capitol Theater in Duesseldorf, they rebuilt it to be the first musical theatre in the provincial capital. The theatre re-opened on January 20, 1996 and played the hugely successful en-suite musical Grease, which would run for three years and be seen by an audience of roughly 1.2 million, thus ensuring Duesseldorf a place on the list of renowned musical cities.

In addition to the music industry, Krauth was also fascinated by culture and the arts. He decided to pursue this route full-time and quit his law school. The year was 1981 when he launched an auction house for art in Duesseldorf specifically, called Th. Krauth Antiquitaten und Auktionen, which was later joined with the British auction house and the third largest auction house in the world at the at the time “Phillips Son & Neale” in the year 1990. Krauth’s auction house operated under the name “Phillips Deutschland” from that period.

In the course of the 1980s, businessmen put on musicals, concerts and ballet performances, particularly within Duesseldorf as well as Cologne. Some of them include the musical by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber,”Evita” in the Philipshalle Duesseldorf, the musical Five Guys named Moe with the new style of jazz called metropolitan “Harlem Jump” at the Philharmonie Cologne and performances by the Russian famous ballerina Maja Plissetskaja in the Tonhalle in Duesseldorf.

From 1995 onwards, Krauth bought three theatres in North Rhine-Westphalia: The Capitol Theater in his adopted home of Duesseldorf (1995), the Musical Dome in Cologne (1998) and the Starlight Express Theatre in Bochum (2002). He redesigned the musical theatres to follow his business philosophy, namely best possible customer satisfaction, economical independence and control over the so-called value-added chain.

In 1997, a second and somewhat smaller theatre auditorium with 400 seats was created within the Capitol Theater. It was called the “Club” where young dedicated artists could introduce their projects and fulfill their artistic ideas. This creative snuggery brought productions like Godspell (1997), Forever Plaid (1977) and Schlaflos in Duesseldorf (1997) to life. It also laid the foundation for the long-term and most friendly cooperation with the Viennese director Alex Balga and the musical artist Anna Montanaro. Both have since risen to international fame, but have always maintained a close bond to the Capitol Theater.

Further highlights were the production of Frank Wildhorn’s Jekyll & Hyde (2003/2004), Michael Brenner’s production of the Queen musical We Will Rock You (2004–2008) and the German premiere of Spamalot (2009) by British Comic group Monty Python.
