I covered Tom Hiddleston’s appearance at Comic-Con on Sunday. Sorry it took me two days to get through some of his new interviews, but in my defense, a lot of stuff happened this weekend! Anyway, Tom looked lovely at Comic-Con and he was very giving and eloquent in interview after interview. He was there solely to promote Crimson Peak, and he was very prepared to answer all kinds of questions about gothic-horror-romance. Gothic Romance is the new Shakespeare, basically. First up, Hiddles chatted with his dear friend Josh Horowitz at MTV. If we’re being fair, Josh has a massive bro-crush on Lord Dragonfly and it’s so obvious that even Jessica Chastain was making fun of Josh. Here’s the video:

Josh asks Tommy about the “freaky” sex scenes between his character and Mia’s character. Hiddleston says: “It is a little freaky, but it is…it comes from the tradition of storytelling where the supernatural is explained through emotional trauma. So there is inherent freakiness involved . Actually, gothic romance is about sexuality, there’s a lot of that literature around and as we know, the Victorians didn’t talk about sex at all so in a way, through ghosts, you could express sort of taboo sexuality…” Since I’ve missed Tommy so much in the past year, I have to say… I enjoy this. I enjoy that he treats his press duties like an opportunity to give intellectual breakdowns and analysis of the subject matter. And it just goes to show you – I wasn’t far off when I said Tommy would probably have a sex scene with a Victorian ghost.

Next up: Tommy spoke to GamesRadar on the red carpet about gothic sex as well. It really seems like all of the nerds are very pleased that Tommy has a proper sex scene at long last. Anyway, he told this outlet: “There’s something about these opposite forces of sex and death in all of our lives. They are inevitable and they are everywhere, and they war. They come to battle each other in gothic romance.” He also talks about the archetype of the tall, dark stranger full of secrets and mysteries. Video below (full disclosure: he looks amazing in this video).
