JoAnna Garcia was born in Tampa, Florida, on August 10, 1979, to a mother who is half-Spanish and a father who is from Cuba. Her mother was a homemaker and a former elementary school teacher, while her father, Jay Garcia, was a gynecologist. Garcia has a brother named Michael who she is close to and they both grew up together.

Garcia began acting at the age of 10 in a local theater, where Disney Channel first saw her work. Her parents insisted that she finish school before pursuing acting, though. She participated in local productions to hone her craft.

Garcia’s parents demanded that she concentrate on her education while filming projects even after Nickelodeon rediscovered Garcia. She enrolled at Florida State University but dropped out to pursue acting full-time. JoAnna explained to People the effect of her parents on her life as follows:

“My mother was such a powerful, competent, and amazing woman. And my father was the ideal father, a feminist, and a fantastic support system. And I believe that only strengthened my resolve. Although I certainly have my moments, doubts, anxieties, and other things, I valued their unwavering support.

JoAnna claimed that the loss of her parents has left her with a huge void

In 2020, JoAnna’s grandparents and parents sadly passed away. She remarked to People, “It’s a gaping hole.” But I firmly believe that what occurs to you is not as important as what happens to you.

JoAnna had a turbulent year in 2020 as she battled with a personal tragedy and reveled in the triumph of Sweet Magnolias. She made sure her daughters Sailor and Emerson knew what she was going through at all times. She clarified:

“My girls have witnessed everything I’ve been through in the past year, from the highs of Sweet Magnolias’ popularity to the lowest of lows—losing my parents. I’m quite open and honest about those feelings. I don’t strive to make things sound good. But I also feel a tremendous amount of appreciation every morning when I get up.
